Eighteen-year-old triathlete Euan De Nigro from Brixen has long attracted attention with top results in national and international competitions. It was therefore no surprise when he was nominated for and admitted to the Carabinieri sports group. Last November he began forty days of basic training: four weeks in Rome and two online. De Nigro describes his time in Rome as

“entering a completely different world, where everything is very orderly and disciplined.”

He was particularly impressed by the respect people showed one another in the barracks. Introductions to criminal law, history, professional subjects and sports ethics took place online, while marching and shooting were taught and practised in Rome. The strict programme left little room for training, but fortunately it coincided with his training break. Shortly before Christmas, De Nigro took his oath before returning to training in Brixen with renewed energy and catching up on missed schoolwork. For now, his school-leaving exams are in his sights, alongside training. Until autumn 2023, he swims, runs and cycles with his home club, Schwimmclub Brixen, representing it in youth competitions; in national and international races he competes with the national squad.
